Kagefit Service and Spatial Design

The Kagefit service design sprint, completed in 2 weeks, was a group project to recommend a floor plan and use of space for Kagefit's new building. Over the duration of this project, we took classes in Brazilian Jin Jitsu and Muay Thai. I collaborated with Katie Ann on research and concept development.

Space

Design a floor plan that includes all spacial needs and maximizes training space

Brief

Storage

Understand equipment usage and storage needs for gym and client gear.

Flow of People

Design a space that reconfigures into devided smaller spaces or opens for large class sizes

Interviews

We interviewed the owner and staff of Kagefit to understand how they use the space and how its usage varies from day to day

Owner/Chief Instructor

Shane Mills

Coach Mills daily schedule consists of arriving at Kagefit around 7 AM, teaching two classes, and then going to one of his other jobs. He returns around lunchtime, takes a nap, teaches 3 more classes depending on the day, and leaves around 9 PM.

Pain points:

  • No storage for shoes and water bottles so they clutter the walkway

  •  Bleachers make class changes chaotic

Instructor/Jin Jitzu Fighter

Tre'ston Vines

Coach Vines schedule consists of assisting in leading the morning sessions and then cleaning and mopping the mats. He then completes his personal training and takes some recovery time. In the evening he helps lead the kid's classes and teaches private lessons.

Pain points:

  • Finding the correct equipment quickly

  • Putting equipment away

Instuctor/ Muay Thai Fighter

Chris McConnel

Coach McConnel arrives mid-morning, assists with pro-training, has some recovery time, helps clean, and eats lunch. In the evening he teaches a few more classes and helps clean up.

Pain points:

  • Fighters don't have lockers so their belongings end up in piles in the already crowded office

  • The kids lose their stuff all the time because it is currently "stored" under the bleachers during class.
